USD STUDY ABROAD Direct Programs
|The University of Western Australia is one of Austalia's premier univiersities and is committed to helping students think globally and prepare to be citizens of the world. There are over 20,000 students enrolled at UWA who are not only from Perth and Western Australia but from all areas in Australia and around the world. USD's direct program with UWA is also the most affordable way for students to study "Down Under".
Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and is a modern, well-planned city with a population of 1.7 million people drawn from around the world. Perth offers all the benefits of a cosmopolitan city and such things as good shopping, a thriving business sector, and a vibrant restaurant and café scene are readily available. It is also a magnificent natural environment which includes the Swan River and many world famous beaches.
Access to/from the university to the surrounding areas is very easy thanks to the excellent bus and train service. Perth’s sunny Mediterranean climate provides warm summers which allow for a wide variety of sports and outdoor activities such as golf, tennis, sailing, swimming, and windsurfing. Make sure to check out the spectacular dolphins of Monkey Mia, hike the nearby Bungle Bungle mountain range, and explore the towering Karri forests of the south west or the rugged ranges of the Kimberly region in the north.
The University of Western Australia (UWA) was established in 1911 as the State's first university and has since grown into an internationally regarded institution with over 24,000 students. The University of Western Australia is recognized internationally for its excellence in teaching and research and as a leading intellectual and creative resource for the communities that it serves. The university is also part of the Group of Eight- a collaboration of the top research universities in Australia.
USD students will have the opportunity access to the university’s full course catalog and are able to pursue a wide variety of courses in English, mainly within the subject areas of history, political science, culture studies, religion, hard sciences, and international studies. USD students will study alongside other international students and local Aussie students. This program is well-suited for students from all fields of study, including those majoring or minoring in the hard sciences or STEM fields.
Universities in Australia approach academics in a very different way than in the United States. Students are expected to pursue more independent study outside of the classroom while still continuing preparation for final exams. This course layout allows students the opportunity to pursue personal academic interests within the context of the course without having the additional reading and writing assignments typically found within the American higher educational system. Students’ grades will typically be only based on a final exam.
While at the University of Western Australia, USD students will have access to the full range of student organizations, wellness center, and other student-oriented services. Students will receive a local student ID, which will allow them access to exercise classes (aerobics, ballet, soccer, basketball, among others), concerts, and theatrical productions.
