Program Description:

About

Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and is a modern, well-planned city with a population of 1.7 million people drawn from around the world. Access to/from the university to the surrounding areas is very easy thanks to the excellent bus and train service. Perth’s sunny Mediterranean climate provides warm summers which allow for a wide variety of sports and outdoor activities.

Academics

USD students will have the opportunity access to the university’s full course catalog and are able to pursue a number of courses in English, mainly within the subject areas of history, political science, cultural studies, religion, hard sciences, and international studies. USD students will study alongside other international students and local Aussie students.

Universities in Australia approach academics in a very different way than in the United States. Students are expected to pursue more independent study outside of the classroom while still continuing preparation for final exams. This course layout allows students the opportunity to pursue personal academic interests within the context of the course without having the additional reading and writing assignments typically found within the American higher educational system. Students’ grades will typically be only based on a final exam.

Accommodation

USD students can choose to live in Perth in student dormitories, which are typically single rooms with access to fully equipped shared kitchen and common living areas, or independently find an apartment close-by. Students will have access to the inexpensive student cafeterias on campus.

Please note that on-campus housing can fill very quickly, so it is best to request this as far in advance as possible. Off-campus housing options are widely available and a very convenient (and more cost-effective option) for many international students. The UWA housing office can assist students to find off-campus accommodation.

Expenses

Western Australia is a USD Direct program, which means students will continue to pay USD tuition and fees. Students will continue to receive any federal financial aid (with the exception of federal work/study) and most USD scholarships (Coyote Commitment, Mickelson, Presidential-Alumni, SD Opportunity, and Ullyot).

Students will pay for housing upon arrival in Australia.

This program is offered for a semester or academic year basis; there are no summer programs available.
*Note: Semester dates are significantly different than standard term dates in the US.
